Financial distress petition: Title-winning women's handball team faces uncertain future - Bankruptcy filings raise concerns about the future of a successful female handball team's existence

The handball community is abuzz with uncertainty as the women's team of HB Ludwigsburg, currently registered for the 2025/26 EHF Champions League Women season, has filed for insolvency proceedings. The announcement was made on July 21, 2025, just ahead of their scheduled participation as the reigning German national champions.

The European Handball Federation (EHF) and the German Handball Federation have been asked to provide official statements and detailed information about the club’s financial status. The EHF has requested these reports by July 28, 2025, and has indicated it will refrain from further comments until the ongoing procedures progress further.

Holger Leichtle has been appointed as the provisional insolvency administrator for HB Ludwigsburg GmbH & Co. KG, the professional department that operates the top-tier handball team. The insolvency administrator’s role will be crucial in determining the team’s future, with possible outcomes ranging from financial restructuring and recovery to potential exit from competitions.

The team, which moved to Ludwigsburg last year, has enjoyed great success under its new name, celebrating championship and cup wins last season. Prior to this, the team, known as SG BBM Bietigheim, had also tasted victory, with numerous accolades to its name.

The reasons for the insolvency application are not yet clear, but the managing director of Ludwigsburg, Sebastian Goetz, cited the overall economically tense environment and the failure of short-term promising sponsor negotiations as the main causes of the financial difficulties.

Despite these challenges, the team's chairman of the board, Christian Koehle, remains hopeful for a positive impact in the future, emphasising the team's commitment to sporting excellence and clear value orientation, both on and off the field.

As the deadline for reports approaches, the handball community waits with bated breath for further updates on the fate of the Ludwigsburg women's handball team.

The European Handball Federation (EHF) and the German Handball Federation are requested to disclose the financial reports of HB Ludwigsburg by July 28, 2025, as the lack of funding threatens the team's participation in vocational training programs and business partnerships. The provisional insolvency administrator, Holger Leichtle, will play a vital role in assessing the future of the team, potentially leading to a revival of its sports programs through financial restructuring or alternative financing solutions.
