Final Stretch of Federal Road B178 Near Zittau Set to Open Soon
Construction on the federal road B178, which began approximately 26 years ago in Saxony's southeast, is nearing completion. This Sunday, the penultimate section of the expressway will be handed over, connecting the tri-border area at Zittau to the A4 motorway at Weißenberg. A citizen's festival will offer the opportunity to test the newly completed stretch between Oderwitz and Oberseifersdorf on bicycles or inline skates, as announced by the Zittau city administration.
From Monday, regular traffic will resume on the approximately six-kilometer-long section. The Saxon Ministry of Infrastructure has estimated construction costs at around 57 million euros, with funding coming from the fund for structural change in Saxony.
To date, around 242 million euros have been invested in the new construction of the Saxon federal road. The first phase, the Zittau bypass, was opened in July 2000. There remains a final section missing to make the route fully passable. The planning approval procedure is currently underway for the 5.8-kilometer stretch with a connection to the A4. The costs for this final stretch are estimated at around 120 million euros.
"Improved connectivity is crucial for our economic development, as well as for daily commuters and those traveling from the Czech Republic and Poland to the country's interior," said Thomas Zenker, the independent mayor of Zittau. Zenker describes the construction of the B178 as a "century project" and expects the Free State to devote all its energy to the legal procedures and swift completion of the missing northern section.
