Autumn Evaluation of Piedmont Businesses: Assessing Energy Performance
The industrial sector in Turin, Italy, is preparing for a significant discussion on the escalating energy costs impacting businesses. On September 17, the Industrial Union of Turin will host an event to address this pressing issue, with over seventy businesses already registered to participate.
According to a recent predictive survey by Confindustria Piemonte, the third quarter of the year is expected to see negative indicators for production, orders, exports, and profitability. Specifically, the survey predicts a 1% decrease in production, a 2.3% drop in orders, a 6.1% decline in exports, and a 6.9% decrease in profitability. For the manufacturing sector, which represents about two-thirds of the sample, these negative balances are even more pronounced.
Giuseppe Bergesio, the president of the Energy Group of the Industrial Union of Turin, emphasizes the importance of providing businesses with up-to-date scenarios and practical tools to manage energy costs. He believes that energy management tools and brokerage will be crucial for managing costs by 2026.
However, the problem of energy costs is not just about prices, according to Andrea Amalberto, president of Confindustria Piemonte. He highlights the times and procedures, the energy mix, and the renunciation of nuclear power as factors that currently disadvantage Italy. Amalberto also underscores the theme of investments in renewable energy plants as a driver for businesses.
National regulatory intervention by the Ministry of the Environment is needed, Amalberto argues, to ensure faster times, preferential lanes for plants, or clear national normative coverages that can guarantee a certain framework for the authorizing work of officials. Factors that hinder the development of new renewable energy plants in Italy include widespread opposition by citizens and local administrators, complexity and slowness of authorization procedures by local administrations, and a regulatory system for connection that creates long delays for the commissioning of plants.
The Energy Group of the Industrial Union of Turin has a programmatic document and various activities, including updates, training, and information on energy scenarios. The Union aims to be an operational support for the choices of businesses regarding energy management and protection tools.
Despite these challenges, there are no immediate structural solutions for the high energy cost in the Italian industry. The energy cost for the Italian industry is approximately 30% higher than the European average, a gap that continues to widen.
As businesses grapple with these challenges, the event hosted by the Industrial Union of Turin on September 17 promises to be a valuable opportunity for discussion, learning, and strategic planning. The search results do not provide information about the companies registered for the event, making it all the more intriguing for those in the industry.
