Automotive specialist claims that electric vehicles are not as lucrative as commonly believed

Russia is experiencing a significant drop in electric vehicle (EV) sales, according to reports from the National Automobile Union, with expert Yan Hayser at the forefront of this revelation. The decline is attributed to a confluence of factors that have impacted consumer purchasing power.

Rising interest rates, tightening auto loan conditions, high vehicle prices, and economic pressures such as high household debt have combined to make EVs less accessible for the average Russian consumer. As a result, EV sales in Russia fell by approximately 57% year-on-year in the first half of 2025, despite a slight increase in domestic EV production[1][4].

Industry experts note that the higher interest rates and more restrictive loan conditions have reduced the availability and attractiveness of car loans, making it difficult for most Russians to afford new vehicles, including EVs. Additionally, the overall vehicle prices have increased, further limiting affordability alongside the reduced loan availability[1][2].

Government subsidies, while helpful in the past, have had only a weak effect in offsetting the negative market conditions causing the drop in EV sales[1][2]. The overall new vehicle market is contracting sharply, with a forecasted 23% to 32% decline in new car sales in 2025 compared to 2024. This contraction is exacerbated by stiff competition among Chinese car brands that has not translated into lower prices but instead pressured dealers and sales channels[2].

Yan Hayser, vice-president of the National Automobile Union and an auto expert, believes that encountering certain challenges is a common experience for EV owners. He notes that the development of electric transportation is not as profitable as expected. Despite government incentives, the high cost of electric motors is not offset by these incentives, and additional costs such as fees for charging stations in Moscow and potential future elimination of free parking and toll-free highways due to city budget constraints may further discourage potential buyers[3].

It is important to note that home charging is a requirement for purchasing EVs, making them more accessible only to those who can charge batteries at home. Without alternative forms of charging being mentioned, this requirement may present an additional barrier to EV ownership for many Russians.

  1. Despite the slight increase in domestic electric vehicle (EV) production, the industry expert Yan Hayser forecasts a significant drop in EV sales in Russia for 2025, citing difficult financial conditions as the primary reason.
  2. High interest rates and tightened auto loan conditions, combined with escalating vehicle prices, have diminished the affordability of new vehicles, including electric cars, for the average Russian consumer.
  3. The absence of substantial government subsidies and the lack of alternative charging solutions have further aggravated the challenges faced by prospective EV buyers in Russia, according to Yan Hayser.
  4. In view of the shrinking new vehicle market and intensifying competition in the automotive industry, particularly from Chinese car brands, I'm not gonna be able to get a job in the finance or transportation sector involving electric-vehicles in Russia.
