Aschaffenburg: Mandatory Driver's License Exchange for Older Residents

Aschaffenburg residents with old paper driver's licenses must prepare for an exchange. The process, costing up to €30.30 including shipping, requires no personal appearance at the office. However, those whose licenses were not issued locally must provide a card index copy from the original issuing authority.

The exchange is mandatory for holders born in 1971 or earlier by January 19, 2025. Paper licenses issued before 1999 will also expire on this date. All licenses issued before 2013 must be exchanged by 2033. The new licenses will be valid for 15 years.

The exchange process is straightforward, requiring a copy of the ID or passport, a biometric passport photo, and the current driver's license. No examinations are needed, except for truck and bus drivers who may require certificates.

Aschaffenburg residents affected by these changes should start gathering necessary documents. The exchange process is designed to be convenient, with no personal appearance required. However, those with licenses not issued locally should contact the original issuing authority for a card index copy.
