Anticipated slowdown in the momentum that fueled previous acts within the CAC 40
The Paris Stock Exchange showcased a measured growth on May 28th, as investors treaded cautiously amidst anticipation for the latest developments in the ongoing trade war and the impending results of Nvidia, a US tech titan. The CAC 40, the principal index of the Paris Stock Exchange, gained 0.31%, amounting to a rise of 24.65 points, to 7,851.44 points.
Susannah Streeter, head of markets at Hargreaves Lansdown, stated that the market excitement seemed to be abating, leading to a state of suspense in the absence of decisive news on tariffs. Donald Trump had announced on Friday his intention to impose 50% tariffs on EU imports from June 1st, claiming unyielding negotiations with Brussels. However, a telephone conversation with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Sunday postponed the implementation of these tariffs until July 9th. Analysts at LBP AM observed that while the bluff seemed questionable, the outcome remained uncertain. They also highlighted the persisting high degree of uncertainty, which should continue fueling market volatility.
Meanwhile, traders are eyeing the publication of the quarterly results of Nvidia, the world's second-largest public company by capitalization, valued at over $3,000 billion. Good results from Nvidia could potentially trigger a new surge of gains on US stock markets and other sectors, according to Ipek Ozkardeskaya, an analyst at Swissquote Bank. Stellantis, an automaker, announced the appointment of Italian Antonio Filosa as its new CEO, effective from May 28th—a move that replaced the outgoing Carlos Tavares. Filosa, previously North and South America director at Stellantis, was also named the new leader of a global quality division. At the time of writing, Stellantis stock price had climbed 0.59% to €9.27.
