American Express Updates Platinum Card Benefits and Boosts Annual Charge

American Express has announced a significant increase in the annual fee for its US Platinum cards, raising it by $200 to $895. The move comes alongside the addition of new benefits valued at over $3,500, as the company targets affluent customers with premium services.

The increase in the annual fee is justified by the expanded perks and partnerships that come with the card. The new offerings include credits at Uber, Lululemon, Oura, Resy, and streaming services, among others. General offerings like travel credits may have a wider appeal than brand-specific credits.

The focus on luxury credit cards is not limited to Amex. Rival companies like JPMorgan Chase and Citi are also entering the market with offerings such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and the newly launched Strata Elite card, respectively. The Strata Elite card, priced at $595, undercuts Sapphire Reserve's $795 fee.

The launch of the Strata Elite card comes shortly after Amex's Platinum card update and JPMorgan Chase's changes to its Chase Sapphire Reserve card. Ben Danner, Senior Credit and Commercial Analyst at Javelin Strategy & Research, stated that the $895 annual fee could be offset by an earning potential of $3,500.

Macroeconomic uncertainty has driven a focus on affluent customers due to the increased value of stability. Companies are raising fees and tightening lending standards to better target affluent customers, who are seen as more reliable and tend to spend more. The recent merger of Capital One and Discover created the largest lender in the U.S., increasing competitive pressure.

However, there is a concern that if these credits are with brands that don't resonate with consumers, the card could lose value quickly. Amex is known for its travel and dining rewards, and the new perks are expected to add significant value for frequent travellers and diners.

The absence of imminent regulation on credit card fees suggests more luxury credit card offerings are likely ahead. Consumer credit card debt has risen due to inflation and higher interest rates, making it crucial for companies to offer attractive perks to retain and attract customers.

In conclusion, American Express's decision to increase the annual fee for its Platinum card while adding new benefits is a strategic move to cater to affluent customers who value premium services. The company's focus on travel and dining rewards, coupled with the new perks, is expected to make the card an attractive option for frequent travellers and diners.
