Almaty's Public Transport Gets Major Upgrade: Eco-Friendly Buses, Video Surveillance, and Better Maintenance
Almaty's public transport system, serving 1.1 million daily passengers, is undergoing significant upgrades. Akim Bakytzhan Sagintayev has ordered improvements, including video surveillance in greyhound buses, enhanced private fleet control, and better maintenance of transport stops. Eco-friendly buses are being introduced, with a focus on replacing diesel vehicles by 2025.
Currently, Almaty's fleet comprises 352 gas-powered, 1373 diesel, 14 electric, and 160 trolley buses. Private carriers plan to acquire 246 eco-friendly buses this year, including 208 gas-powered and 38 electric buses. A batch of 150 electric buses from TÓО 'AlmatyElectricTrans' is expected soon, contributing to the city's environmental goals.
To enhance safety, Akim Bakytzhan Sagintayev ordered the installation of video surveillance cameras in all greyhound buses. However, 20% of private carriers' buses still lack this system. Maintenance plans include repairing 100 buses last month, with another 190 scheduled for the next three months, and an additional 100 by the end of the year. This will improve transport quality and increase serviced routes.
The Akim also ordered daily work to improve passenger transport quality and safety, increasing digitization and implementing new technologies in management processes. TÓО 'AlmatyElectricTrans' has addressed the driver shortage by hiring 100 drivers in February and planning to hire another 400 in the next two months. Measures include organized meals, uniforms, and bonuses for drivers.
Almaty's public transport modernization aims to improve safety, reduce environmental impact, and enhance service quality. With the introduction of eco-friendly buses and better maintenance, the city is working towards a greener and safer transport system. The Akim's orders and the efforts of relevant organizations are expected to significantly improve the public transport experience for Almaty residents.
