Almaty acclaimed an Oscar for best stunt, achieved in the movie Tomis
In a historic moment for Kazakhstan's film industry, the Nomad Stunts group has clinched the "Oscar" for stunts in the "Stunt Coordination for a Foreign Film" category for their breathtaking work in Akan Satayev's film "Tomiris".
The ceremony, held online due to the pandemic, saw the stunt team being recognised for their titanic effort in the stunts for the film. The award was delivered to the group's leader, Merited Figure of the Republic Zhaydarbek Kungeinov, by mail after the online ceremony.
Kungeinov, who has been working towards this victory for nearly 20 years, expressed his gratitude to the awards committee. "We are thrilled to receive this prestigious award. It is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and skills of our team," he said.
The Nomad Stunts group has been making waves in the international film industry, with branches now established in Turkey, Kyrgyzstan, and Azerbaijan due to high demand from film studios. They have worked on stunt choreography in films like "Kochuykor", "Mongol", "Jaujurek Myn Bala", "Doroga k Mati", "Viking", and the TV series "Marco Polo".
The group has also collaborated with celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, and Jet Li. Their next project is with the legendary Jackie Chan.
In addition to the "Oscar", the Nomad Stunts group was also nominated for a "Taurus" award last November. This is Kungeinov's second nomination, his first being for the Russian film "Viking". His next goal is to win a second "Taurus" award.
The stunt team for the next Kazakh film is currently rehearsing and demonstrates exceptional skills in sword fighting, archery, high jumps, and defying physics. Meanwhile, Kungeinov has received proposals for collaboration from Hollywood films, one of which is to be shot in Dubai and features 5 top Hollywood actors.
Interestingly, "Tomiris" is the first fully Kazakh-produced film to be nominated for the "Taurus" award. The film's stunt team worked gruelling, multi-hour hours and had meticulous rehearsals of stunts with life-threatening risks.
The awards committee considers factors such as realism, execution, difficulty, and quality when deciding the winner of the "Oscar" for stunts. With their latest win, the Nomad Stunts group is currently considered one of the strongest and most versatile stunt teams in the world.
