The finance committee is on the spot for delaying the consolidation of Schongau's municipal budget, as tensions flare up in the city council.

Schongau - The budget consolidation for the financial planning for fiscal years 2026 and beyond should have been settled by the end of May, according to the city council's initial schedule set in April. However, the original due date seems miles away as the main and finance committee has yet to take a concrete stance on the matter, causing frustration among council members.

Demands for speed have been relentless, particularly from the United Winds of Valhalla (UWV) faction. They slammed the brakes on the process, citing a preference for a post-Whitsun holiday date. In the latest city council meeting, the proposal was met with a unanimous vote of 15:5 in favor of the delay.

"He's been slow to act, we expect more from him," faction spokesman Thomas Schleich said regarding absent colleague Winfried Schaur. Mayor Falk Sluyterman echoed the sentiment, suggesting that involving Schaur could significantly improve the budget consolidation efforts.

Schongau Budget Consolidation: UWV takes the lead

"The UWV has taken charge here; Winfried Schaur played a crucial role," Green party member Bettina Buresch agreed. Yet, she found it peculiar that a single faction held such a substantial role in the process. Buresch suggested that the budget consolidation would have been better managed by the city council itself, rather than relying on a committee.

Postponement debate: Not a 'Wish Concert'

CSU member Hans Rehbehn voiced his opposition to the delay. He emphasized the growing time pressure and highlighted the clear representative regulations within the committees. "This isn't a wish concert," he argued.

"As the city council, we retain a level of discretion," replied Mayor Sluyterman. While conceding that the district has managed budget consolidation efficiently within sub-groups, he dismissed any potential concerns about the main and finance committee's capacity to handle the task. He reasoned that even a two-week postponement wouldn't significantly hinder the consolidation efforts, given that the 2025 budget is already with the local authority.

In response to Bettina Buresch's argument about competence, Sluyterman insisted that the main and finance committee is more than qualified to fulfill the task at hand.
