During a captivating Q&A session centered around Alfa Romeo's collaboration with the Luna Rossa sailing team today, Santo Ficili, CEO of Alfa Romeo and Maserati, dropped a few hints regarding the upcoming SUV's timeline.
"The rollout pace for our electrification strategy hasn't been as swift as we anticipated, so we're shaking things up and following our customers' specific requests," Ficili stated. "Our future plans for Alfa Romeo will encompass not just battery electric vehicles, but we're working diligently to refine and innovate internal combustion, plug-in hybrid, and mild hybrid powertrains. In this vein, we are revamping our strategy. Once we're all set, we won't keep our die-hard fans waiting; the new Stelvio will come to market in no time."
Although this admission wasn't entirely surprising, it was still a tad disheartening. Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the new SUV's launch had been pushed back, attributing the delay to "tepid demand for electric vehicles." Industry sources disclosed to Reuters that the second-generation Stelvio's anticipated debut has been rescheduled for no sooner than September 2026.
The current Stelvio undoubtedly demonstrates the passage of time. Despite a refresh last year, it remains tough to keep up with the latest offerings from Alfa Romeo's German luxury counterparts. Alas, the hero we've been waiting for isn't quite in the immediate wings.
