Airbus A330 MRTT+ Boosts Thailand's Military Capabilities
Airbus has announced a significant boost to Thailand's military capabilities with the order of an A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport Plus (MRTT+) by the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF). The new aircraft, set to begin conversion in 2026 and be delivered by 2029, promises enhanced efficiency and versatility.
The MRTT+ will retain 95 percent commonality with existing A330 MRTTs, ensuring minimal disruption to training and support requirements. It will undergo military conversion at the A330 MRTT Centre in Getafe, Spain.
Airbus has also expanded its cooperation with Thai Aviation Industries (TAI) through a memorandum of understanding. TAI, in partnership with Airbus, will be responsible for the future maintenance of the MRTT+ in Thailand, aligning with the country's 'Make in Thailand' strategy. This extends their existing collaboration on Thailand's C295 fleet.
The MRTT+ will come equipped with both boom and hose-and-drogue refuelling systems, a medical evacuation kit, and a VVIP cabin configuration. These features, coupled with innovations from the A330-800 commercial airliner such as Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines, new aerodynamics, and wing-tips, will reduce fuel burn by up to 8 percent and noise, strengthening Thailand's defence posture and enhancing its capacity for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief missions.
The A330 MRTT+ order by the RTAF, along with the expanded cooperation with TAI, signals a commitment to modernising Thailand's air force and enhancing its ability to respond to various challenges. The aircraft's advanced features and reduced environmental impact are expected to significantly benefit Thailand's defence and humanitarian efforts.
