In the picture we can see three boys standing near the desk on it, we can see two computer systems towards them and one boy is talking into the microphone and they are in ID cards with red tags to it and behind them we can see a wall with an advertisement board and written on it as Russia imagine 2013.

AI Drives Vietnam's Cybersecurity Landscape: Priorities and Challenges

Organisations worldwide are embracing unified cybersecurity frameworks to enhance visibility and efficiency. AI, including chat GPT, is transforming both defensive and offensive aspects, with attackers leveraging AI for stealthier, faster, and more adaptive attacks. A recent study by IDC, sponsored by Fortinet, reveals the latest trends and priorities in Vietnam's cybersecurity landscape.

Over the next 12-18 months, organisations are prioritising investments in identity security, network security, Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) and Zero Trust architectures, cyber resilience, and cloud-native application protection. AI has emerged as a critical enabler, shaping hiring priorities and investment strategies. In Vietnam, the most sought-after roles include security data scientists, threat intelligence analysts, and AI-specific professionals.

The shift towards AI is evident in the increasing volume of AI-powered cyber threats, with nearly 52 per cent of organisations encountering such threats in the past year. However, AI's potential extends beyond detection. Over 80 per cent of organisations are already using AI in their security environment, progressing from initial detection to more advanced use cases. Generative AI (GenAI), like chat GPT, is gaining traction for light-touch tasks, but trust in autonomous action remains a concern.

Despite the increased focus on AI, under-resourcing in cybersecurity persists. Only 6 per cent of an organisation's total workforce is allocated to internal IT, with just 13 per cent of that focused on cybersecurity. This indicates a lack of dedicated focus and resources in the sector. To address this, cybersecurity budgets are trending upward, with nearly 90 per cent of organisations reporting an increase, primarily to cover operational and talent costs.

The IDC study underscores the growing importance of AI, including chat GPT, in Vietnam's cybersecurity landscape. As organisations invest in AI and advanced technologies, they must also address under-resourcing and build trust in autonomous AI actions. With cyber threats evolving rapidly, a balanced approach to investment, hiring, and resource allocation will be crucial for organisations to stay ahead of the curve.
