Advanced streetcars navigating Vitebsk's urban landscape
In Vitebsk, two state-of-the-art tramcars from BKM Holding will soon grace the city's streets, boasting a futuristic appearance. These white-and-blue vehicles, resembling transportation straight out of science fiction, are notably distinct from the existing models worn by years of use.
With elongated noses and streamlined shapes, these new tramcars are a meter longer than their predecessors and can accommodate more passengers. The vehicles are equipped with 35 seats and have a total capacity of 159 people.
The new generation of tramcars in Vitebsk features low floors, wide platforms that can accommodate up to three strollers, and climate control that ensures comfort in all seasons.
Vitebsk's tramcar park last saw an update in 2014, with just over 40 cars currently in operation out of nearly 50 available. Alexander Feduchov, General Director of OJSC "Vitebskoblavtotrans", acknowledged the need for a significant overhaul. Initially, these new tramcars will be tested on the third route before determining permanent directions.
Meanwhile, Minsk is making strides in modernizing its public transport system by introducing low-floor T811 trams. These new trams, already in service, mark a significant upgrade in Minsk's transportation infrastructure. However, details about the autonomous features or futuristic designs in Minsk's upcoming trams are not forthcoming.
As the average age of Minsk's rolling stock approaches 16 years, updates are being planned to keep the transportation system current. By mid-2025, Minsk aims to replenish its tramcar park with 20 new trams equipped with elements of autonomous driving, although specifics are still under wraps.
The new tramcars in Vitebsk, sourced from BKM Holding, are not just a shift in appearance but also a leap in capacity within the public-transit industry of the city, as they are a meter longer and can accommodate 159 people, including 35 seats. Meanwhile, Minsk's finance sector is investing in the modernization of public transport, with the introduction of T811 trams, while plans for autonomous features and futuristic designs in Minsk's upcoming trams are currently under wraps in the realm of finance and transportation.
